Monotype, is a printmaking process that is a natural transition for a painter to make.
The process starts by painting or rolling out oil or water based
inks onto a flat surface,
often a sheet of plexi-glass called a plate. The plate is placed on the press bed and a sheet
of heavy paper is lined up and layed over
the inked plate. The pressure is ajusted on the
press, this is the step that takes the most practice. The pressure is a balancing act between
pushing the ink
(too much pressure) and the image not transfering (not enough pressure).
This is learned through practice and eventually it becomes instinct. It is better
to start
light on the pressure and build it up as needed. If their is any ink left on the plate after the
origanal print is pulled a new sheet of paper can be
layed down and another image can
be pulled, this fainter image is called a ghost. After the print is pulled it is put on to a rack
to dry for about three days. After
the drying period the print can be reworked with just
about any medium, I like to go back in with oil pastels and pull out abstracted imagery.
The monotype process allows the artist a wide array of possibilities. One can work abstractly
or with incredible detail and much more quickly than
traditonal painting. I like it as a
sort of instant gratfication and a medium that loosens me up as a painter. I can try many
ideas out in a short amount of time and then
carry the momentum back to the painting studio.
